The Jochen Rindt Trophy returns to the Thruxton Historic

02 May 22

Following a successful debut at the Thruxton Historic in 2021. The Jochen Rindt Trophy (JRT) is set to return in 2022 and is shaping up to be one of the highlights of the two-day event.

The JRT celebrates the best single-seater race cars with up to 2-litre engines from the 60s, 70s & 80s and includes cars from Formula Atlantic, Formula 2, Formula 3 and Formula Ford 2000 with many in period livery.

FORMULA 3

We are delighted to announce that Ex F1 driver and World Sportscar Champion Derek Warwick will be backing the Formula 3 grid in this year's JRT and will attend the Thruxton Historic in person.

A fantastic career through the British, European and world single-seater ranks from Formula Ford 1600 to F1 (162 Grand Prix), a world championship triumph in sportscars and some spectacular drives in the BTCC make up a fabulous racing C.V.

Derek's Formula 3 years in 1977 & 78 were some of the most evocative in the history of the category. In 1977 he raced a Toyota powered Chevron B38 and Ralt RT1 which took him to 3rd in the BRDC Vandervell British F3 Championship and 5th in BARC BP Super Visco British F3.

Derek Warwick

In 1978 driving the Ralt, he battled all year with Brazil’s Nelson Piquet. Piquet took the honours in the BP rounds, but Warwick came out on top as Champion in the BRDC F3 British series.

Derek’s Local track is Thruxton, for years living and racing out of Alresford in Hampshire and now living in Jersey it is still ‘his local’ circuit. Derek was awarded the BARC Gold Medal in 1992 and is proudly represented on the Thruxton honours board. It will be great to have him back at the UK’s fastest circuit.

His Chevron B38 F3 and Ralt RT1 are already confirmed to race in the JRT. Both are back in the original Warwick trailers livery from 1977 & 78.

Ralt F3 cars and Thruxton seem to go hand in hand! Graham Brunton Racing (GBR) will field a trio of Ralt F3 cars for the Derek Warwick Trophy. The No.2 Martin Brundle 'Sieger' car from those epic battles with Ayrton Senna will be back and once again driven by last year’s JRT F3 class winner, David Thorburn.

Martin Brundle F3

Oban based Steve Barlow in a wonderful ex Monaco, Alfa Romeo powered, Ralt RT3 is the second GBR driver. In the ex Andrew Gilbert-Scott chassis, Helensburgh's Fraser Gray completes the trio for GBR.

All three cars represent the most successful Formula 3 power plants of the era with VW, Toyota & Alfa Romeo motors.

Woods and Barlow

Clive Wood & Pippa Tanner-Wood will be racing again at Thruxton. Pippa in an Argo JM6 F3 car and Dad, Clive, in either his Chevron BDA Atlantic or one of the two ex-Derek Warwick F3s from the family stable. All four cars have an entry with two drivers TBA. Watch this space.........

FORMULA 2

A new addition to the JRT2022 grid will be Nick Pancisi in the ex Ronnie Peterson STP March 722. The car has seen an incredible restoration. It will be amazing to welcome the car back to Thruxton, 50 years since the last visit when it was driven by the great Swede as seen in the image below.

Nick has also persuaded the owner of the sister car, driven by Niki Lauda, to bring it to the Thruxton Historic. It will be on static display throughout the weekend.

We hope to be able to recreate the iconic photo above from 1972, 50 years after it happened, as Daniel Clayfield’s stunning ‘Cevert Elf’ March 722 will also be racing in the JRT.

FORMULA ATLANTIC

Ian Flux will once again put his name to and support the Formula Atlantic class. Ian will no doubt bring his unique take on motorsport to the paddock with more amazing anecdotes.

Ian Flux

The Ian Flux Cup will be awarded to the winner of the 1971-78 cars and the Fluxie Trophy for the later examples.

Chris Porritt will be wowing the crowds in the ex Alo Lawler L&B excavations Chevron B29.

We’re also very excited to have Callum Grant in the 'Tropicana' March joining the party and to have a 'Pinch Plant' Lyncar on the grid with the experienced and rapid Peter Venn at the wheel.

Formula Atlantic

Rory Smith, the 2020 Formula Ford Festival champion, will be gunning for 2022 JRT in his rapid Ralt RT4 Cosworth BDA.

Along with entries from Matthew Wrigley, John Hayes-Harlow, Robin Lackford, Woods Clive & Martin. The Formula Atlantic category is guaranteed to thrill the crowds.

FORMULA FORD 2000

One of the entries in the FF2000 class, Steven Connor, is having his Van Diemen RF82 rebuilt as a ‘Senna’ Tribute. He is well on his way, and it will be in the exact livery as Senna raced in 1982 and shown in the image below, taken in the Thruxton pitlane 40 years ago in ‘82.
